Confection sunflower has many uses. Called either confection or non-oil, seeds are a delicious and nutritious snack or addition to different dishes.

​

Originally from North America, it´s now being produced in several countries, finding one of the best places in Argentina.

​

Confections are typically sold for two different markets: in-shell or kernels (dehulls). Confection sunflower seeds are graded according to size and separated into groups.

 

The largest size will go into the in-shell market. The medium-sized seeds are usually hulled for the kernel market. The smallest size will go into the bird and pet feeding market.

​

It may come in several varieties, from round shape (dakota type), to extra long (XL hybrids that are up to 3 cm long), passing through Long shape, which is the most common one because of it´s versatility.

 

It´s mostly black with white stripes, but there may be the opposite to it, being white with black stripes.

• 24/64 (9,50 mm up) or Mega, for exquisite customers

• 22/64 (8,75 mm up) or Jumbo, the standard for human consumption

• 20/64 (8,00 mm up), may be used either way, as edible seed or bird food

• 18/64 (7,00 mm up) or Birdy, mostly used as bird food

• 16/64 (6,00 mm up) or Birdy, ideal for bird food or for hulling

The formula is 22 / 64 x 2,54 = 8,73, where 2,54 represent an inch.

Length options

• Round varieties goes up to 18 mm long

• Large, up to 22 mm long

• And XL up to 26 mm long. There are some of as much as 30 mm.
