MILLET
Millets are small-grained, annual, warm-weather cereals belonging to the grass family. They are highly tolerant of drought and other extreme weather conditions and have a similar nutrient content to other major cereals.
Millets are grown all over the world, but specially in Africa and Asia with a major distinction in their use. They can be harvested as cereals for human and animal consumption, or can be used as a grass for livestock.
When used as food, they serve to produce beverages, soups, flour and all the preparations you can get with it. When used as feed, it´s one of the major ingredients in most seed mixes.
When used as bird food, the color of the grain is quite important. Some mixes require a unique, plain color, and others are developed to attract birds by using different colors. The most popular ones are:
-
Red millet
-
Black millet
-
Green millet
Even though there are other varieties, 80% of the market uses the white and the yellow millet.
